I think it's a matter of perspective and personal playstyle. By 'personal playstyle', I mean the way you prefer to play THIS game, which can differ from the usual canned categories people spout off about ("casual player", "powergamer", etc).
I had the same frustration you did when playing City of Heroes/Villains. I learned that it's because of my background in EverQuest that really skewed my view of that game. My "where's the cheese?" question revolves around the dead end that exists in CoH/V once you hit max level. I'm used to max level being the first step of many, not the end. It's probably why I enjoy this game so much (for now) since there is no discernible end or point where your focus becomes a lot more restricted and narrow.
I also learned that even having an end game in the literal sense, really isn't enough for me. This I figured out whilst running through WoW. I found that I really disliked being in situations where my personal playstyle clashed with that of most of my guild. I remember many times where 2-3 hours into raiding, like a third of the raid force logged off for whatever reason. That pales in comparison to many of my experiences raiding in EQ (first trip to Vex Thal - 17 hours from zone-in to Aten's death; Plane of Growth clears for Tunare kills took 6-8 hrs from beginning to end, at first; etc), due largely to the stubbornness of the people involved ("**** it, I ain't goin' to sleep til this sum***** is dead."). And while it's easy to try to say that these kinds of people "have no lives" or "have no jobs", I know for a fact that that line of thinking doesn't apply.
My point is, it's all a personal thing. You're lucky in that you have a set group of folks you can game with (who I assume have the wherewithal, financial and otherwise, to play in the same manner as you do), which makes playing a game a lot more accessible and fun. Bottom line is, if you could get all of those friends to play this game with you, I don't think you'd have to spend 60% of your time farming ISK so you can participate in what is the fun part of the game for you. You might be able to reduce that to 40% or even less, if you have other folks who may LIKE doing that kind of thing (as well as folks who like to build, folks who like to mine, etc). A collective effort can contribute to everyone doing what they enjoy most and less of what they don't particularly enjoy.
But if you think your mentality is stifled in THIS game, don't try other games in the MMO genre (most of which don't even HAVE PvP or treat it as a redheaded stepchild in comparison to PvE, which may be worse than not having it at all).
